A weekend bookended by bank holidays, don’t you just love Easter. Jesus died so we could rave for four days with out feeling guilty about work. I’m pretty sure that’s what it said in the bible. Plenty of stuff on so I won’t ramble on in this blasphemous theme.

Secretsundaze @ Stamford Works (Buy Tickets)
Ooo its nearly time for Secretsundaze to emerge from its winter cocoon and head back out into the great outdoors. I cannie wait. But just to wet your whistle they’re throwing a Bank Holiday warehouse party this Thursday. I remember reading somewhere that its at the great little warehouse called the Stamford Works in Dalston where the recent DDD birthday took place. Its round the back of the Jazz Bar and Kingsland Road station. However I can’t find where I read that, so the official word is its in Dalston and yet to be announced. For the line-up they’ve got a veteran of the New York scene Morgan Geist of Metro Area fame, whilst in support they have new comer Nina Kraviz who’s found breaking fame on Radioslave’s Rekids. › Continue reading
EarPIPE’s Extensive But a Tad Late NYE/NYD Guide

So I guess I should do some NYE recommendations since it’s that time of year again. However I might be a little late on the ball these days as you practically need to start planning your NYE activities in the summer. But if you’re still stuck for something to do here goes:
Eastern Electrics (Buy Tickets)
Top of the picks again is Eastern Electrics. Last year’s party was quite phenomenal – great line up, good crowd and interesting location. This year is more of the same. Headlining the main room is the amazing Steve Bug, he’ll be bringing in the new year with his 11pm set. Shonky is in there for some moral support whilst the BLOC folk take over the second room with a seriously dubbed out line-up – Kode 9, Appleblim and Plastician. Finally Man Make Music host the third room with a couple of bumping headliners in the form of Justin Martin and Riva Starr, a pretty stellar line-up for new years. Location wise they’ve taken over some railway arches, this time in London Bridge, next door to the new Shard building on St Thomas Street three minutes walk from the station. Life Beyond the M25 – The Warehouse Project is Back in Manchester

It’s pretty easy to stay stuck on this fair island called London. It seems everything you could possibly need is right here within the confines of our concrete perimeter, the M25. But believe it or not life does exist beyond those walls. For the last four years, during the autumn and winter months, Manchester has been the clubbing destination of the North. The reason – a grotty car park found in the arches of Manchester’s Piccadilly train station where the Warehouse Project setup shop to host some of the strongest nights past the Watford Gap service station.
Once again the team have put together another great run of nights starting from the end of September and running every weekend through till New Years Day. Last year we had great fun at the Cocoon night where Tobi Neumann absolutely smashed the main room after Sven Vath and the Ar:Pi:Ar boys completely stamped their mark on the back room. We also heard great reports about the Minus night with Richie Hawtin and the Resident Advisor night with Luciano and John Digweed.

I’m Sorting My Life Out, But If I Didn’t Have to Here’s Where I Would Go>

Just a quick note on weekend manoeuvres. I’m not going anywhere as my life is in tatters after the last few months of being massively on it, all of which I will litter these pages with the details. But if I were to head out I would probably be looking at these things:
Saturday
The decks have barely cooled down from the last party, but pappa Sven is already back at matter for another Cocoon party. Even if Sven isn’t your cup of tea there is still the highly talented Onur Ozer who will finally be gracing London with his visa in hand, not to mention Reboot loaded with his hotly anticipated tune of the summer.
Even though pappa Sven is a veteran on the scene, nothing gets more veteran than Kevin Saunderson one of the birth givers to the techno sound. He’s dusting off the old Inner City moniker which gave us Good Life and Big Fun. This is definitely going to be a special show. But just for kicks Kevin Saunderson is going to play a few tunes and they’ve also brought in Claude Von Stroke to sweeten the deal.
Aside from the two heavyweights there is Tom Middleton in the East Village basement doing an Electro Funk set or there is Superfreq doing their final party at Cable with Adultnapper, Chloé and Tolfrey along with the ressies Mr C, Luke Vb and Dollz at Play.

Lets Do The German TimeWarp Again

You may still be revelling in the aftermath of New Years Eve shenanigans but please do spare a thought for your party needs in April as tickets are now on sale for this year’s TimeWarp event in Mannheim Germany!!
If you haven’t already heard that the bird is the word, TimeWarp is a humongous indoor arena Techno event in Germany which has been running for the last nine years or so. EarPipe was lucky enough to check out TimeWarp last year and by golly the Germans don’t do things by half. Last year every conceivable techno DJ was on the bill, from Hawtin and Vath to Villalobos, Luciano, Cox and Liebling (there were so many names I obviously had to resort to surnames only). They even had enough room to give Laurent Garnier his own arena for nine hours. It’s a proper German style marathon event starting from the Saturday evening running right through till late afternoon on the Sunday. Last year Richie Hawtin began his 7 hour closing set at 7am!?!?!
The setting itself was some sort of market place/arena complex based in the sleepy industrial town of Mannheim just south of Frankfurt. Whilst it doesn’t sound very extravagant the production effort for the event is next to none. If you don’t believe me check out the photos from last year here.
Getting to TimeWarp is pretty straight forward too. Simply jump on an aeroplane and head to Frankfurt. You can get trains from the airport direct to Mannheim and it only takes about 30-40 minutes. So technically you can fly out on Saturday morning/afternoon, go straight to Mannheim for TimeWarp, then go straight back to the airport and fly home. It’s doable but exhausting like we found out last year. So this year EarPipe will probably make it into a nice weekend get away, flying to Frankfurt on the Friday checking out either the legendary Robert Johnson nightclub or Sven Vath’s futuristic Cocoon, then doing TimeWarp followed by flying back either Sunday or Monday. Does that sound deluxe or what?

The Warehouse Project Sets Up in Store Street for the Final Time

Just a quick note to let you know those folks in Manchester are at it again. The third season of the Warehouse Project sees them take over the Store Street car park for the final time. For twelve chilly winter weeks you can see the finest lineups ever to hit Manchester in a stunning urban and underground setting. Co Founder Sam Kandel says,
“The programme for this years series is, we think, the best yet. It has been gradually pieced together since last October. This year there will be a second more intimate room of music, which has allowed us to go even deeper with the line-ups, putting on some really underground breaking talent in addition to the huge main room action you are used to. The preparation for the annual series has become a genuine labour of love for all involved – now everything is set its time to get moving… Welcome back to The Warehouse.”
So which nights are EarPipe looking forward to? Well the first one on our radar has to be the Minus Presents night on the 17th October. You would have thought we’d be sick of Richie and his label mates. But no we keep going back for more. Friday will see the Minus gang roll into Manchester ahead of their main Contakt event in London. Support comes from Troy Pierce, Gaiser and Barem. This will no doubt be a road block event, so get your tickets early!
The next big one has to be the Exhibitionist night on 1st November. The alien from Detroit returns to pummel the north with his space aged techno. Joining Jeff Mills will be three of the hottest heads in house music, Ewan Pearson, Ame and Dixon. Definitely not one to be missed.
Sven Vath does his usual stop off with his Cocoon night on 14th November. He’s joined by Extrawelt and Tobi Neumann, both hot property right now, especially after Tobi’s recent Secretsundaze CD release. They’ve also got all three of those Romanians doing the business right now. Raresh, Rhadoo and Pedro will be playing for six hours as the RPR sound system in the intimate backroom.
Finally if Novembers at home don’t mean anything to you the 21st November sees Resident Advisor host John Digweed and Luciano. The cheeky Chilean has also called in support from his label buddies Thomas Melchior, Alejandro Vivanco and Reboot.
So there the nights we think might be a bit alright. Obviously there are the other twenty odd nights which also look fantastic, there just isn’t enough room on these pages.

Cocoon Compilation H Review

Sven Vath’s Cocoon releases the first of the two crown jewel compilations. The second, released after the summer is The Sound of the Season where Sven showcases the “big” Ibiza tunes so all the workers can reminisce how pappa Sven blew their mind at the end of a two day marathon encompassing Space and DC-10. However for this review we’re more interested in the first of the releases. The ‘Compilation’ series, now in its Hth incarnation showcases the tracks which will be rocking the Cocoon boys and girls over the summer. These compilations usually shy away from the garishness in the big “big” hitters normally seen on the Sound of the Season CDs. But they still cover techno tracks which you will be hearing in the clubs but probably in a more underground manner. The compilation is left in an unmixed format its perfect for budding DJs who have an instant party on a CD to mix with, perfect for the million and one DJs heading out for their big Ibiza gig at the Orange Corner.
This year the CD ranges from quality names such as Dubfire, Jooris Voorn, Simon Baker, Cassy, Gui Boratto and Efdemin. The theme throughout is electronic house and techno that makes you dance. The first track comes from Cassy with her sublime and subtle hypnotic loops. A Plea For Me uses her soft voice in short vocal elements whilst a simple yet effective loop opens the CD. There is minimal progression in most Cassy tunes but she can just strike the hypnotic nail on the head with such ease and precision. Jooris Voorn follows Cassy with a similar style. He uses warm bubbling basslines and Moroccan influenced percussion as electronic horns increase in intensity. Another great track to build the mood of a set.
Oliver Ho uses syncopated beats and electronic abstract pigeon coos on Tempo. Quirky and strange, only the boldest DJs will use. What follows on from here is a series of your regular drawn out techno tracks for the club, trendy bleeps and clicks with plip plop beats. Vath has an outing with fellow German Flugel who imposes his minimal influences on Sven, creating Trashbin Dance. Whilst Simon Baker infuses bleeps with an elephant trumpet on U.
Len Faki goes for the more traditional tougher edged peak time Cocoon sound with heavy beats, evil synths and an interesting incorporation of the Jungle Brothers ‘I’ll House You’ vocals. Defector or merely regression back to the techno scene, old now new boy Dubfire follows with Diablo. Like most of Dubfire’s tracks, they’re very well produced but seem very clinical and generic. It’s an entertaining track but at the same time lacks anything interesting. Its quite an art.
The CD begins to move away from the peak time bleeps and heads towards the wind down. Gui Borrato transitions the CD starting with a dark Gaiser style beat before flourishing into bright and colourful synths and strings. Something that Gui is so good at. Efdemin continues the bright and colourful synths with a dash of acid on Float. The acid flows into Mark August’s 3 of A Kind which is sure to be massive this year and I’m pretty sure it’s already been moving a lot of dancefloors already. Old style synths intertwine over a heavy marching kick drum which intensifies and releases like a pressure valve.
Compilation H is a solid collection of tracks suitable for all techno occasions. Whilst some of the techno tracks start to sound similar through the middle, they still all have an individual quality outside of the CD. Good tracks for the summer and perfect if you’re a DJ.
