Simon Baker – Moonblock / Mamaia Highway | Single Review

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 | Single Review | No Comments

simon bakerI do enjoy a Simon Baker release. Plastik released on Playhouse was everywhere in 2008 whilst X Y and Z was a fantastic follow up on Leftroom. Other than a release for 20:20 Vision in July we haven’t heard much from Simon Baker, until now. His latest release on MurMur is probably just to keep the “look at all the great labels I’ve released on” list ticking over. Fair enough.  MurMur is a good label and Simon’s Moonblock is a great release.

Title track Moonblock is a pumped up houser with an incredibly contagious wiggling bassline. It doesn’t really let up for breath, it just grooves away blissfully unaware only occasionally breaking down with a splash of bossa nova. It’s catchy and very danceable, very much like Mamaia Highway the track on the other side. It’s got another great wiggling bassline that sounds like a computer crunching numbers on an old sci fi show; there are the staple bossa nova/carnival samples which bring a party vibe; and like Moonblock it just doesn’t let up. It’s these tracks which are becoming a staple on the London scene – continual rolling house come techno tracks which swish and release in such a way that they’re perfect for the club and a crowd up for some straight up dancing.

Geddes & Alex Jones – Tubular | Single Review

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 | Single Review | No Comments

geddes274Geddes and Alex Jones team up on the latest MurMur release for another slice of deep house action. Tubular has some great beats. The only way I can describe them is that they sound like big bubbles that rise up inside a water cooler bottle. Kind of that bassy tubby sound, ya get me? Geddes and Alex Jones then sprinkle a few hi hats and vocal snippets to give you another simple yet hypnotic slice of deep house; however its not Geddes and Alex Jones who are the stars of this show. It’s Lauhaus who turns out a remix which retrofits the hypnotic vocal snippets over a far hookier bassline and shuffling up beat rhythms. I’m pretty sure he’s done something similar on his own productions, but like they say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Tracklist:
1. Tubular
2. Zeiss
3. Tubular (Lauhaus remix)

May The Rave Be With You!

Friday, April 24th, 2009 | Event Preview | No Comments

secret-sundaze-header

I love this stretch of April to May. There’s a nice series of bank holidays which firstly equates to four day weeks or long weekends, but secondly and most importantly it means so many great rave up opportunities. You might have only just flushed the last bank holiday weekend out of your system, but here it is again, another extended weekend in our midst.

So what are the options for the May day rave up?

Saturday has some nice options with Excuse The Mess being top of the pile. They’ve got My My live along with the always excellent Matthew Styles in room 1. Then in room 2 Ralf Kollman takes the spotlight to entertain along with Shane Watcha.

The first part of Eastern Electrics also kicks off on the Saturday too. They’ll be vibing with some dub-tastic sounds with Dublime who have brought in Brendon Moeller. Room 2 has been taken over by the folks that brought you the Bloc Weekender. Their room is looking particularly sharp with the likes of Metro Area, Appleblim and Zomby. Then the third and final room is hosted by the Man Make Music guys. They’ve got the West Coast house head and Buzzin Fly aficionado Justin Martin.

Tickets are still available for both, so get Excuse the Mess tickets here and Eastern Electrics tickets here.

A Little Geddes Mix To Warm You Through

Thursday, January 8th, 2009 | Event Preview | No Comments

geddes274Shake off those cob webs, detox resolutions are there to be broken so you can compare stats with your friends. The less time spent on your detox the great the sign of bravado, coolness and… urm… feeble will power. I lasted until the Saturday when I was coaxed into a trip to The End to celebrate the New Year with a friend who was ill on the real New Year. How I crumbled or more so flopped over like a digestive biscuit dunked in tea.

Anyways, the reason I’m banging on about going out is because long time EarPipe favourite Geddes of Mulletover/Rekleiner/MurMur Records fame is making his debut at Fabric this Saturday (10th Jan). You might of thought he’s played there before, I did… turns out I was wrong. He’s on the bill with Jamie Jones and Craig Richards in Room 1 and the tech house purveyors Nathan Cole and Eddie Richards from Wiggle in Room 2. A humbly brilliant line-up if you ask me.

If you don’t feel in the mood then perhaps this little winter warmer mix from Geddes will persuade you. And if you don’t go or can’t make it, then think of this as an example of what you missed out on.

Enjoy :o )

EarPipe Has an Even Hazier Look Back at the Music Through 2008

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 | Music, News | 1 Comment

earpipe-2008-music-look-back-header1

I normally struggle to think what tunes have been and gone in the last month, so trying to remember what I was listening to back in January is a mountainous mission in itself, which is probably why I’m going to write this avoiding any specifics and will talk around the subject pretending I know what I’m talking about like any good politician would do. But from what I can recollect “minimal” became housier (or maybe I became housier?), Dubstep collided with Techno and Disco has undergone a massive revival

johnny-dSo lets start with the shift towards the housier sounds. We noticed a lot of DJs ditching the repetitive and bland “minimal” sounds that were starting to stagnate and instead nudging more towards the house end of the spectrum. This meant a bit more funk and soul embedded into tracks, more vocals and jazzier samples. It may sound like we’re harking back to the funky house days circa 2000-02, but this was slightly different, it was more an amalgamation of what came out of the “minimal-tech” sounds which dominated ’05-’07 with older house music sensibilities as seen from the Chicago deep house days. A perfect example of this is probably My My, their remix of Djuma Soundsytem’s Les Dijnns ’s typifies where the sound was during 2007 whilst their latest release Everybody’s Talkin’ is a glimpse into the house sound doing the rounds at the moment. The same goes for Josh Wink’s Stay Out All Night and Matthew Styles We Said Nothing, both distinctly Chi-town influenced numbers which bebop’s to a fun and funked up skipping rhythm. In a similar vein who could forget Johnny D who’s had a fantastic year. His track Orbitallife was causing raucous everywhere through the summer not to mention all his other releases.

But then it wasn’t all fun funked up house, this year saw a lot of dub style house and techno music with heavy basslines at a relaxed pace. Tracks like Trus’me’s W.A.R Dub particularly stood out as did a lot of the output from Gedde’s new label MurMur which had artists like Bearweasel pumping out deep and hypnotic house. One of the best tracks of the year for me was the highly elusive Wax1001. There was no artist or label, just this white label containing the rawest house track ever. A simple track with clunky beats, classic hi hat patterns and a dark raw bassline made Wax1001 show how less is definitely more.

Tom Demac – Stand Beside Me Single Review

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 | Music, Single Review | No Comments

Geddes and label MurMur must have a broken quality tap somewhere in their headquarters because that blasted thing is releasing a constant stream of quality tracks. Release five sees rising star Tom Demac grease the wheels of future juggernaut label.

Tom has two tracks on this release. Title track Stand Beside Me is a moody tech house plodder which has a mildly sinister groove punctuated with outbursts of hi hat percussion that are sure to prevent those crowds from gormlessly swaying. Three by Four is the other track from Tom Demac. It has clunky beats, round basslines and an aggressive saw synth with a few muted bleeps and tones chucked in for good measure. Its progressive in nature with enough reverberation to make you feel hungry.

Head honcho Geddes remixes the title track by reigning in the loop lengths making it snappier and punchy. It shuffles along nicely but misses the outbursts of the original. Its typically Geddes and that means dark, techy and dubby. As the ambassador always says, “Excellente”.

Bearwesel – Orpington EP Review

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 | Single Review | No Comments

Murmur continues their impressive form of quality with their third release from Bearweasel. The duo made up of Dean Mushin of Urban Gorilla fame and Louisa Page has a particular penchant for dub house. This shows in their first release for the label. Wander Down is a stripped back deep dubby house track. Synth stabs ride throughout the track as a low pulsating bass bubbles up at the end of each bar. The remix comes from DubShape who adds a little spice with new riffs and additional layers of percussion to give the track more progression and dynamic. The final track Pillowhead is another simple dub house groover. It’s steady in its pace and groove with subtle changes to keep things interesting. Solid dub house but it maybe lack in progression for many people out there.

Bearwesel Orpington EP is out now on Beatport
