The last bank holiday weekend for the year is just around the corner. Sad times for many as it marks the beginning of the descent into winter. This ensuing doom normally results in everyone going big for the weekend, and as a result, people tend to cool off the weekend before. But as any good football team will tell you its all about the pre-season friendly to get you match fit for the onslaught. I mean you don’t want to be flaking out on day two of the bank holiday because you didn’t practice a two day bender the weekend before. That would just be embarrassing. A few bits and bobs going on this weekend with the big elephant in the room being the Lovebox weekender. Now extended to three days featuring the likes of Roxy Music, Grace Jones, Hot Chip, Hercules and Love Affair to name a few stellar names. Saturday looks like a hot tip with Roxy Music headlining the bill along with Mark Ronson. The terribly named Relentless Energy Stage hosts a solid line up consisting of Bookashade, Jesse Rose, Henrik Schwarz and personal favourite Dixon whilst Grandmaster Flash rounds off the Rizla arena on a old skool hip hop tip. This weekend Barcelona becomes the centre of attention as Sonar festival rolls into town. The festival itself is a jam packed 3 days and 2 nights of music and art featuring the likes of Plastikman, The Chemical Brothers and Roxy Music. However its not just the festival that garners all the attention, as for the same weekend Barcelona turns into a thriving party city with what are now known as the Off Sonar parties. This year we’re spoilt for choice in terms of party venues. We’ve got parties on beaches, on rooftops, on terraces, on boats and at secret villas. Valentines weekend, according to numerous industries the only weekend where you can show your love to that special person through expensive mediocre set menus, wilted single roses and novelty heart shaped gifts. The whole thing has become such a charade, but luckily there are plenty of options this weekend to show our protest against the greeting card and novelty item dictators.
Red bull Music Academy at South Bank Centre (Buy Tickets)
This weekend sees the start of the Red Bull Music Academy which is taking place over the coming weeks in London. The academy brings together prospective musical talent from across the world to work and share ideas with help from established and successful music industry types. In conjunction with the academy, Red Bull have a series of events lined up for the general public. This Friday sees Red Bull team up with Resident Advisor at the stunning Royal Festival Hall in the South Bank Centre for a head on collision of experimental electronica, Jazz and techno. EarPIPE’s Extensive But a Tad Late NYE/NYD Guide

So I guess I should do some NYE recommendations since it’s that time of year again. However I might be a little late on the ball these days as you practically need to start planning your NYE activities in the summer. But if you’re still stuck for something to do here goes:
Eastern Electrics (Buy Tickets)
Top of the picks again is Eastern Electrics. Last year’s party was quite phenomenal – great line up, good crowd and interesting location. This year is more of the same. Headlining the main room is the amazing Steve Bug, he’ll be bringing in the new year with his 11pm set. Shonky is in there for some moral support whilst the BLOC folk take over the second room with a seriously dubbed out line-up – Kode 9, Appleblim and Plastician. Finally Man Make Music host the third room with a couple of bumping headliners in the form of Justin Martin and Riva Starr, a pretty stellar line-up for new years. Location wise they’ve taken over some railway arches, this time in London Bridge, next door to the new Shard building on St Thomas Street three minutes walk from the station. Life Beyond the M25 – The Warehouse Project is Back in Manchester

It’s pretty easy to stay stuck on this fair island called London. It seems everything you could possibly need is right here within the confines of our concrete perimeter, the M25. But believe it or not life does exist beyond those walls. For the last four years, during the autumn and winter months, Manchester has been the clubbing destination of the North. The reason – a grotty car park found in the arches of Manchester’s Piccadilly train station where the Warehouse Project setup shop to host some of the strongest nights past the Watford Gap service station.
Once again the team have put together another great run of nights starting from the end of September and running every weekend through till New Years Day. Last year we had great fun at the Cocoon night where Tobi Neumann absolutely smashed the main room after Sven Vath and the Ar:Pi:Ar boys completely stamped their mark on the back room. We also heard great reports about the Minus night with Richie Hawtin and the Resident Advisor night with Luciano and John Digweed.

You may or may not have heard that London’s beloved T-Bar is set to close in mid December. A while back they sent out e-mails asking for punters to find a new location for them. Lazy if you ask me! But lets hope they succeed as T-Bar has been a staple night spot for those looking for quality underground music all at no cost. In its prime the likes of Damien Lazarus, Michael Mayer, Ivan Smagghe and Andrew Weatherhall were gracing their DJ booth frequently on every night though the week but the weekend and the Sunday carry on party used to be nothing short of ridiculous. So in true “I should have gone home hours ago” style, Tea Bar have got a series of parties set through the week to go out with a bang, no doubt with the aim of hospitalising a few in the process.
Some great DJs will be coming through their doors, from the likes of Chloe, Pier Bucci, Anja Schneider, Cassy and Heidi, but our top picks has to be Damien Lazarus’ return with chum Michael Mayer and Mulletover Geddes for their infamous Stink night. Whilst on the right side of the weekend, Thursday, sees Andrew Weatherhall and Ivan Smagghe resurrect their Wrong Meeting night. And finally T Bar closes with the very last Dig Your Own Rave, where the Sunday afternoon and evening is whittled away with Jamie Jones, Matthew Styles, Dave Congreve, Clive Henry and many more.
It’s sure to be a painful couple of weeks saying goodbye at work. Sickies at the ready….

Two of London’s finest producers join forces for Get Physical on their first collaboration. The result is Kazkasi a funk fuelled wiggler coming in three different flavours.
The original fires along with its funk fuelled bassline. Around that, galloping percussion and a nicely worked vocal sample make it a simple but exciting house number. The Swahili dub works around the same elements except they’ve added in some horns and chords to make it whooshy and a bit more big room. Finally the Emotional mix is slightly more laidback. Its still funk fuelled but its not as in your face. It has some of the big room horns but it doesn’t go over board.
These are fun peak time tracks, guaranteed to get feet shuffling. Although I’d steer away from the Swahili dub to head for either the original or emotional mixes.

As the title suggests, there might be an alright night going on at Manchester’s Warehouse Project next weekend. They got a few of those alright house DJs. Dixon, Ame, Jamie Jones and Ewan Pearson to name a few. A perfectly good lineup in itself…. Actually that is a damn fine lineup. However for the folks in Manchester that just doesn’t cut the proverbial mustard. They had to go and add Jeff Mills, one of the greatest techno DJs ever to grace three turntables. What a line up for Halloween. What would make this night even better? Not much really. The only thing that could would be a pair of free tickets from us!

Jamie Jones – 911 Review

Does anything not turn to gold when Jamie Jones touches it? You just can’t fault his raw edgey tech house productions. His latest release 911 sees Jamie return to Damian Lazarus’ label Crosstown Rebels where he slides in haunting space aged blips with a classic growling tech house bass which centres on quite a comical 911 call about a marijuana freak out. It’s rough round the edges and has a great raw feel. Its simplicity and directness has one thing in aim and that’s to rumble a dancefloor to pieces.
