Pierce & Jerl – Amourette | Single Review
Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 | Single Review | No Comments
I’ve never heard of Pierce and Jerl until their latest release came across me on GetPhysical’s digital label GetDigital. Their track Amourette is a shuffling funk monster which congas around your head. Latin guitar samples and the pita patter of claves sit perfectly with the smooth rolling bassline urging you to lose yourself in its engulfing sound. M.in chop up the samples and throws them into the mix with a bouncy Chicago backing track. You’ve got pumped up beats, the rolling pianos and warm double bass low end creating that classic Chicago house sound. Both great turnouts.
The second track from Pierce and Jerl is Brazilique. It’s got a pretty standard urging tech-house beat and unsurprisingly a Brazilian vocal sample. But as you get into the track its got this quirky hollow tom tom flutter. Overall it’s probably best to stick with Amourette but Brazilique won’t do any harm.
Tracklist:
1. Amourette (Original Mix)
2. Amourette (M.in Remix)
3. Brazilique (Original Mix)

GPM 100: Happy 100th Release GetPhysical! Review
Thursday, November 20th, 2008 | Music, Single Review | No Comments
It seems like yesterday when GetPhysical first broke onto the scene with MANDY’s Put Put in 2002. So I don’t know where that puts their world takeover with Body Language and Manderine Girl in 2005. That was release 27 and 29 respectively. Since then until now the GetPhysical clan have notched up 100 releases on their bed posts. To mark this century milestone they’ve brought in all their favourites to collaborate with each other on a nine track monster EP.
MANDY rekindle their partnership with Bookashade to come up with a Donut. No that’s not a derogatory term for the track it’s the title. They use some round beats and a bit of healthy wood percussion with whirling synths to create in moody bobbing monster. Its eerie and quirky but with a little funk to get down too. Its no Body Language, this is MANDY Vs Bookashade 2.0.
Two of my favourite producers the Italoboyz and Noze get together on Double Trouble. I’ve loved the way the Italoboyz cleverly sampled old jazz and jive records whilst the quirkiness of Noze is hilarious in a good way, however when they go head to head on Double Trouble its just disturbing. There are jazz drum and sax skits left, right and centre which make for an extremely scatty track. Then add the freaky vocal samples from Noze make for a sample martini shaken to hell. That said I’m sure the silliness of this track will find its niche at some German after after after party.
On Funkshovel, Lopazz and Heidi hit back with some attitude laden grooves. A ghetto tech bassline oozes attitude as basic yet intricate tom toms fidget along with a sporadic vocal sample. Its simple and o so diiiiirty. In a similar vein, Dakar and Siopis’ Dubai has the filthiest saw tooth bassline ever, combined with its big splashing drum hits results in a down and dirty mechanical boogie.
The other efforts from the other collaborations are also worthy, Einzelkind and Meat creates the simple and driving Gin which hums away brilliantly. The Djuma Soundsystem and Raz Ohara take on a slow italo disco form with piercing vocals, twinkling notes and a galloping electro synth. DJ T and Thomas Schumacher produce an intricate bubbling track with round bass and scatty woodblocks. And finally Patric Baumel with Cathlin Devlin and Tiger Stripes with Audiofly both create dark driving numbers.

Jamie Jones and Simon Baker – Kaskazi | Single Review
Monday, November 3rd, 2008 | Music, Single Review | No Comments
Two of London’s finest producers join forces for Get Physical on their first collaboration. The result is Kazkasi a funk fuelled wiggler coming in three different flavours.
The original fires along with its funk fuelled bassline. Around that, galloping percussion and a nicely worked vocal sample make it a simple but exciting house number. The Swahili dub works around the same elements except they’ve added in some horns and chords to make it whooshy and a bit more big room. Finally the Emotional mix is slightly more laidback. Its still funk fuelled but its not as in your face. It has some of the big room horns but it doesn’t go over board.
These are fun peak time tracks, guaranteed to get feet shuffling. Although I’d steer away from the Swahili dub to head for either the original or emotional mixes.

2. Jamie Jones & Simon Baker – Kazkazi (Swahili Dub)

Siopis – Penny From The Lane Review
Tuesday, August 26th, 2008 | Single Review | No Comments
You may know Siopis as Silversurfer of Kiki and Silversurfer fame. On Penny from the Lane he goes solo on his debut release for Get Physical. Getting some vocal backup from Mr Brean, Siopis creates an oddball blend of ghetto tech and electronic house. There are hints of Diplo and Switch in there with the usual haunting Kiki and Silversurfer feel. Title track Penny from the Lane has swagger and funk through its strange Baltimore breaks style rhythm yet Siopis keeps his familiar out there bleepiness. It’s an interesting combo and it seems to work. Second track Klein Mine is similar in style. A Ballsy break beat which seems to mutate over the track as haunting electronic synth stabs sift through from the background. The vocals are more restrained and could function as more of a dub version of the title track. Push Fog is just a broody bass heavy house track. It’s slow and quite sinister as the cauldron of bass is stirred. Creaking away, disco funk elements seep through in the percussion. A great moody track to go with a “different but in a good way” release.

DJ T – Outbreak Review
Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 | Single Review | No Comments
DJ T, the Monza and Get Physical don is back with Outbreak, his first release in over a year since The Dawn. On Outbreak he serves up a 32oz cut of heavy tribal beats cooked raw. It’s a gutsy track which focuses on percussion, not getting too distracted by those things called melodies. It is quite simply seven minutes of heavy beats and intricate bongo percussion stopping for breath only occasionally. On the flip the True School mix takes a more drawn out Detroit approach. This mix takes its time in introducing the various elements of the track, starting with a Carl Craig Sandstorm-esque synth which then evolves and grows to include the other elements. It all accumulates at the end in a swirl of electronic sound. Both are excellent tracks, but the original mix makes you want to don some war paint and spears which always gets our vote.

Get Physical off shoots a kinda Kindisch new label
Friday, July 25th, 2008 | News | No Comments

Kindisch, German for Childish, is the sort of new label from the Get Physical folks. I say sort of new because the idea was conceived way back in 2006 and they’ve had a whole host of releases since then too. But what is new is that they are now finally online with their website www.kindisch.net.
Why Kindisch? Well Kindisch is the playground where artists are invited to run free and experiment within all the varieties of contemporary House music. Adoration for House music with no boundaries or borders is the basis for the Berlin based label which strives to pump fun, freedom and creativity back into the House music scene.
We’ve already seen some great releases from the label such as Gavin Herlihy’s Opium Haze which featured on Chris Wan’s MyNeighbourWontLetMePlayMyMusicLoud mix. Tracks from Samim, Jay Haze, Riva Starr and Raz Ohara have also released some great tracks on the label, with DJs such as Derrick Carter, Claude Von Stroke, Lee Burridge and Jesse Rose already singing their praises.
To commemorate the new site, those lovely people at Kindisch have got a mix of some of the label’s best moments for you to stream or download.
