Save the London Nightclubs – Put Your Name Down on Some Electronic Paper
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 | News | No Comments
Two London clubbing lynchpins face the axe and the only conservative way we can save them is to sign a petition. Today is the last day for Plastic People to collect enough names for their appeal to Hackney Council on the 11th March. So you better get a shuffle on or else we’re going to have to do it 60s style and chain ourselves to Curtain Road. Get your names on the list here: http://www.petitiononline.com/PP2010/petition.html It’ll be a shame to lose such a diverse and brilliant little club as PP…
The other club facing the chop happens to be the last of the super clubs – The Ministry of Sound. The sharp edge of the guillotine isn’t so imminent in their case as their threat comes in the from a property developer requesting to build a residential building next door. Obviously residential areas and nightclubs don’t really mix, so it should be opposed from the outset which is what the MOS Save Our Club petition is all about. http://www.ministryofsound.com/Petitions/PetitionForm.aspx. Whilst it might not be the underground clubland jewel it once was, it is still an institution that should have its place like the monarchy, red telephone boxes and Cadbury’s chocolate.
Get those names down now.
EarPipe Interviews Agoria About Balance 016 for Soonnight
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 | News, Other | No Comments
EarPipe’s Chris Wan fired off some questions to France’s Agoria about his new Balance 016 mix and general DJ antics for Soonnight.com.
Soonnight’s Chris Wan spoke to Frenchman Agoria about his influences, minimal prejudices, and the original and interesting way in which he assembled his track list for this mix.
So, you’ve got your new Balance mix coming out soon; could you tell us a little bit about why you decided to do another compilation and how it came about?
Well I made a long break not producing techno/electronic music during two years as I worked on the soundtrack of “Go Fast” and then I spent few months working on establish my own label InFiné, trying to develop it, searching new artists, helping them to reach their aim…
At the beginning of last year I asked myself if I wanted to start working on a new album or anything else. I wasn’t sure I was ready to create new materials and honestly I was wondering if there was still a relevant reason to make a new mix CD. Every website get his own quality podcast, music is everywhere, I wasn’t sure of the necessity of releasing again a mix CD. But I decided to try. I thought it was relevant to find my own personal and exclusive selection in a time when you can find any single track you look for in less than a minute. How could I excite the desire of the listener one more time with this excessive music offer? First I needed to find by myself the key to discover those tracks… but I guess we’ll speak later about this…
Your ‘At the Controls’ mix from 2007 received quite a bit of critical acclaim and was ranked as the 13th best compilation of the 00s by RA, plus the previous two Balance mixes by Joris Voorn and Will Saul were big successes. Did you feel any pressure in trying to recreate something as good or better? › Continue reading

So here are the final two mixes from this Friday’s Balance night at Cable in London Bridge.
The first is one of Birmingham’s finest. Surgeon has been tearing up dancefloors across the UK and further for the best part of two decades and is one of the figureheads of the British techno scene. Generally sitting towards the tougher end of the sound he’s often been compared to Detroit’s Jeff Mills. This mix taken from Shanghai last week will no doubt show what the man can do. Orbital Return!!!!
Friday, January 30th, 2009 | Event Preview, News | No Comments

When I was a wee nipper one of the inspiring things about dance music was seeing Orbital headline the main stage at Glastonbury. It was electrifying to see their electronic sounds and bobbing torch spectacles whip up the thousands of people predominantly into their indie music. It was truly a magical moment. I talk as if I was there, but unfortunately I was only of the age which allowed me to go across the road. I witnessed the occasion by the magic of BBC television. It did however set two goals for me, go to Glastonbury (still unachieved) and see Orbital, preferably in one go. The dream vanished in 2004 when Orbital played their last gig never to return.
BLOC Book The 13th-15th March It’s BLOC Weekend Baby!
Saturday, January 17th, 2009 | Event Preview, Events, News | No Comments

BLOC Weekend looks set to return after last year’s sell out success. Taking place on the 13th – 15th March weekend, this year sees the early spring weekend move location to the Butlins “mega-resort” in Minehead near Bristol. It boasts the largest water park in the South West with a water slide that can spit you out at up to 40mph. Definitely what you need after a night of jaw breaking techno and Aphex Twin’s microphone in a blender trick! But it’s not really about the luxury settings of the holiday resort its more what’s on. And judging by this year’s current line-up it could be held down the local sewage works without deterring anyone.
So who’s on the bill? › Continue reading

Does it matter That There Are Free Tickets to Give Away!!
Thursday, January 15th, 2009 | Event Preview, News | No Comments

Haven’t been to matter yet? Redit runch been holding you back?
Well now is a perfectly good time to as they’re giving away free tickets for this weekend!!! That’s right, free tickets to get in to matter for Friday or Saturday night. A no you won’t have to do anything that you might regret later in life to get them tickets.
So what’s on this weekend?
Friday plays host to Wonky Pop a fun and frivolous night where anything goes and Saturday sees Air take up their new residency with Krafty Kuts and Ali B. So its defo worth checking out the club since its free. It would be rude not to.
To get your tickets just follow the instructions at http://www.mixmag.net/content/get-unlimited-free-tickets-matter-weekend-mixmagnet
Lets Do The German TimeWarp Again
Thursday, January 8th, 2009 | Event Preview, News | No Comments

You may still be revelling in the aftermath of New Years Eve shenanigans but please do spare a thought for your party needs in April as tickets are now on sale for this year’s TimeWarp event in Mannheim Germany!!
If you haven’t already heard that the bird is the word, TimeWarp is a humongous indoor arena Techno event in Germany which has been running for the last nine years or so. EarPipe was lucky enough to check out TimeWarp last year and by golly the Germans don’t do things by half. Last year every conceivable techno DJ was on the bill, from Hawtin and Vath to Villalobos, Luciano, Cox and Liebling (there were so many names I obviously had to resort to surnames only). They even had enough room to give Laurent Garnier his own arena for nine hours. It’s a proper German style marathon event starting from the Saturday evening running right through till late afternoon on the Sunday. Last year Richie Hawtin began his 7 hour closing set at 7am!?!?!

The setting itself was some sort of market place/arena complex based in the sleepy industrial town of Mannheim just south of Frankfurt. Whilst it doesn’t sound very extravagant the production effort for the event is next to none. If you don’t believe me check out the photos from last year here.
Getting to TimeWarp is pretty straight forward too. Simply jump on an aeroplane and head to Frankfurt. You can get trains from the airport direct to Mannheim and it only takes about 30-40 minutes. So technically you can fly out on Saturday morning/afternoon, go straight to Mannheim for TimeWarp, then go straight back to the airport and fly home. It’s doable but exhausting like we found out last year. So this year EarPipe will probably make it into a nice weekend get away, flying to Frankfurt on the Friday checking out either the legendary Robert Johnson nightclub or Sven Vath’s futuristic Cocoon, then doing TimeWarp followed by flying back either Sunday or Monday. Does that sound deluxe or what?
UK folks can get their tickets from Ticketweb
But it might work out cheaper to get the international E-Ticket from here

Apparently The End will end but might not end the way we thought it would end
Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 | News | No Comments
It turns out the people that own the venue which the End is situated in have changed their mind on turning the venue into offices and luxury apartments due to the current economic climate. So they are instead looking to keep it as a night club! Unfortunately the folks that run The End as we know it have already made their plans and didn’t want to continue on. So The End will still end, but its likely to continue as a club, hopefully something decent. Mr C told the “always first to know” folks at 4Four.org after a rumour from data transmission emerged the End might continue. However Mr C was sceptical whether anything in a similar vein would take its place.
EarPipe Has an Even Hazier Look Back at the Music Through 2008
Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 | Music, News | 1 Comment

I normally struggle to think what tunes have been and gone in the last month, so trying to remember what I was listening to back in January is a mountainous mission in itself, which is probably why I’m going to write this avoiding any specifics and will talk around the subject pretending I know what I’m talking about like any good politician would do. But from what I can recollect “minimal” became housier (or maybe I became housier?), Dubstep collided with Techno and Disco has undergone a massive revival
So lets start with the shift towards the housier sounds. We noticed a lot of DJs ditching the repetitive and bland “minimal” sounds that were starting to stagnate and instead nudging more towards the house end of the spectrum. This meant a bit more funk and soul embedded into tracks, more vocals and jazzier samples. It may sound like we’re harking back to the funky house days circa 2000-02, but this was slightly different, it was more an amalgamation of what came out of the “minimal-tech” sounds which dominated ’05-’07 with older house music sensibilities as seen from the Chicago deep house days. A perfect example of this is probably My My, their remix of Djuma Soundsytem’s Les Dijnns ’s typifies where the sound was during 2007 whilst their latest release Everybody’s Talkin’ is a glimpse into the house sound doing the rounds at the moment. The same goes for Josh Wink’s Stay Out All Night and Matthew Styles We Said Nothing, both distinctly Chi-town influenced numbers which bebop’s to a fun and funked up skipping rhythm. In a similar vein who could forget Johnny D who’s had a fantastic year. His track Orbitallife was causing raucous everywhere through the summer not to mention all his other releases.
But then it wasn’t all fun funked up house, this year saw a lot of dub style house and techno music with heavy basslines at a relaxed pace. Tracks like Trus’me’s W.A.R Dub particularly stood out as did a lot of the output from Gedde’s new label MurMur which had artists like Bearweasel pumping out deep and hypnotic house. One of the best tracks of the year for me was the highly elusive Wax1001. There was no artist or label, just this white label containing the rawest house track ever. A simple track with clunky beats, classic hi hat patterns and a dark raw bassline made Wax1001 show how less is definitely more.
Earpipe Looks Hazily Back at the Clubs, Festivals and Parties in 2008
Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 | Events, News | 1 Comment

Well that’s another year over. Where did the time go? For us it was mostly spent in darkened rooms listening to repetitive electronic music in and around London with the occasional trip to another city or abroad. It probably explains why this look back on 2008 is a hazy one at best. I believe we left most of our brain cells splattered across Fabric’s dancefloor. But we’ve managed to piece together the fractured pieces of memory to come up with this half rate look back at 2008. Enjoy
)
One of the main stories of 2008 has to be the shake up of London clubs. 2008 kicked off on a sombre note with the closure of The Cross/Key/Canvas complex in Kings Cross. Apparently Kings Cross needed some regeneration to make it look good for the incoming French on the EuroStar. As a double whammy Turnmills also decided to close their doors at the end of January, due to the lease holders deciding their central London location would make much more money as flats and offices rather than from weekends of debauchery. They’re right, but even though Turnmills had pretty much run its course pushing a dying Trance night and a load of “electro house” nights with asymmetrical haircuts it was still a shock losing two stalwarts of the scene.

We’ve just heard on the grapevine that the Eastern Electrics venue will be on Great Suffolk Street in Southwark. Its in the Seager Storage Units 29-31just before the August Bank Holiday location. We’ve heard the venue is looking particularly spectacular to see the tracksuit clad massses into ‘09.

EarPIPE’s Frivolously Fantastic Yet Quite Practical London NYE Guide
Wednesday, December 17th, 2008 | Event Preview, Events, News | No Comments
Since we’re halfway through December with Christmas right on our doorsteps I guess we should really cover what’s going down on New Years Eve. If you think you can bear the vomit laden streets and tourist clubbers who make it out for their annual party then read on. If not EarPipe recommends a house party or hired venue for you and your friends to get seriously pissed and whatever else you might want to do….
So what is the party to go to for us? Top of our list is Eastern Electrics. You may remember them from August Bank Holiday weekend, maybe for the wrong reasons. Here at Earpipe we had an OK night but it’s true it could have been organised better. But Eastern Electrics has assured us they’re one the case. So we’re definitely going to give it another shot because who could say no to some South London urban space. You may cry that its going to be cold. But fear not as you’ll be donning some kitsch 80s throw back tracksuit because as part of this year’s line-up Eastern Electrics have brought in Tayo and his legendary tracksuit party!! What better excuse to look 80s hip hop cool or more likely in our case Chuckle Brothers retro.
Tracksuits aside you may want to know what’s going on music wise. Well they’ve got three rooms in this warehouse location. The main room will have the formidable Mulletover who have brought in one half of MANDY Phillip Jung, they’ve also got Crosstown Rebeller Damien Lazarus, who might we add played an absolute stormer at the T-Bar closing parties, and to support these heavyweights they’ve got London faithfuls Geddes from Mulletover and Simon Morell form DDD. Tayo and Frank Tope take over room two with their tracksuit party canvassing support from ex Radioslaver Serge Santiago and to round things off those up and coming Man Make Music kids will be delivering the full spectrum of bass heavy dance music. So pretty fantastic if you ask me.
Tickets are still going at £20 from ticketweb here
And you might still be able to get some £16 ones from View London here
Not bad for New Years Eve!
But if bopping around a cold warehouse in a tracksuit doesn’t take your fancy then here are the next best…
Secretsundaze
Secretsundaze looks particularly good. They’ve taken Village Underground a rough and ready design space in the heart of Shoreditch. The location sounds fantastic and they’ve got a fantastic line-up too. Favourites from the year Omar S and Johnny D will be playing alongside Giles Smith and James Priestley. Expect nothing less than brilliant house music!
Get your tickets from here.
Horse Meat Disco
If you want something a bit off the wall then Horse Meat Disco might be right up your street. They’ve got plenty of delightful disco to see you through the night at Cargo and to give it that Studio 54 edge they’ve brought in show girl Johnny Woo of Gay Bingo fame.
Get your tickets from here.
Fabric
Now we move on to the big boys. Firstly Fabric has one big New Years Eve melting pot of styles. Its going to be a head on collision of Fabric vs Fabric Live. In room one they’ve got our Innervisions favourites Ame and Dixon along with Nottingham whipper snapper Matt Tolfrey. Of course the New Year wouldn’t be the same if the residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis weren’t present. Then over in room two they’ve got Yoda, Craze and the perverts. If you like hip hop and DnB there’s no point looking anywhere else.
Get your tickets from here
The End
The second big boy is The End. They do their final New Years Eve and who better to bring the club in to the New Year for the final time than the French master Laurent Garnier. All night the French wizard will do what he does best and that’s quality journeys through dance music. He’ll get a little support from Layo too and in the back room the most excellent Jimpster and Milton Jackson will have you buried deep in the ground with their deep deep stylings. Sure to be a fantastic party however you might be left a bit tearful not because it’s closing down but because of the ticket price.

EarPipe’s Christmas Three Club Orgy! Matter to Fabric via Secretsundaze
Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 | Event Preview, Events, News | No Comments
Like any good dance music resource we should round up how to get yourself in a ditch via the most fun way during this festive period. So let’s begin with this weekend.
Saturday sees a lude three-way orgy between Fabric, Matter and Secretsundaze. Firstly Fabric has their annual Digweed soirée joined by Lee Burridge and Radioslave which is sure to be prog-e-licious affair. Up the road at Kings Cross’ Scala, the Secretsundaze rabble once again takeover. They’re joined by Shindoe, 2000 and One and Kabale und Liebe in the main room whilst the residents Giles Smith and James Priestley hold fort in the back room with the excellent Brothers Vibe. Finally a Secretsundaze do wouldn’t be the same without a lick of disco, so the Disco Bloodbath boys take over room three. Again another great party to get too.
Last but not least we have Matter and quite possibly the first decent all round line-up they’ve put on since they’ve opened. The main reason for this is due to RA who is taking over for one night to throw their Christmas party with many of the fantastic DJs that have graced their podcast this year. You’ve got everything from the disco funk realm of Trus’me, the electronic techno and house stylings of DJ Koze and Modselektor and the dubby darkness of Appleblim and Shackleton. And that’s just the main room; out back you’ve also got Move D and the excellent Motor City Ensemble. What’s also good about this night is that you can get £8 tickets from RA. That’s £12 cheaper than your normal Matter night with a line-up that is more exciting than poking your knob in the VCR. The big question is, which party do you go to? Unfortunately I can’t answer that; well my answer would be to do all three.
So I present to you EarPipe’s Christmas Three Club Orgy. The map should help you get about and you should be able to squeeze in about 2.5 hours in each club. It may require a dedicated driver and a wheel barrow of cash too. But meh its Christmas… spoil yourself… Thank me later when you’ve got a stinking hangover the next day.
Anyone for High Tea?? T-Bar Closing Parties
Thursday, November 13th, 2008 | Event Preview, Events, News | 1 Comment
You may or may not have heard that London’s beloved T-Bar is set to close in mid December. A while back they sent out e-mails asking for punters to find a new location for them. Lazy if you ask me! But lets hope they succeed as T-Bar has been a staple night spot for those looking for quality underground music all at no cost. In its prime the likes of Damien Lazarus, Michael Mayer, Ivan Smagghe and Andrew Weatherhall were gracing their DJ booth frequently on every night though the week but the weekend and the Sunday carry on party used to be nothing short of ridiculous. So in true “I should have gone home hours ago” style, Tea Bar have got a series of parties set through the week to go out with a bang, no doubt with the aim of hospitalising a few in the process.
Some great DJs will be coming through their doors, from the likes of Chloe, Pier Bucci, Anja Schneider, Cassy and Heidi, but our top picks has to be Damien Lazarus’ return with chum Michael Mayer and Mulletover Geddes for their infamous Stink night. Whilst on the right side of the weekend, Thursday, sees Andrew Weatherhall and Ivan Smagghe resurrect their Wrong Meeting night. And finally T Bar closes with the very last Dig Your Own Rave, where the Sunday afternoon and evening is whittled away with Jamie Jones, Matthew Styles, Dave Congreve, Clive Henry and many more.
It’s sure to be a painful couple of weeks saying goodbye at work. Sickies at the ready….

Win Tickets to the Digweed/Luciano at The Warehouse Project!
Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 | Event Preview, News | No Comments
My hasn’t the autumn flown by. It only seemed like yesterday when we were getting all excited about the Warehouse Project’s last venture out in their Store Street location. But fear not there are still some parties left to get too. There is still the 13th December with with the Chems and SMD or how about some head grating noise from Squarepusher on the 12th December? There’s also Boys Noize and MANDY on the 19th December too. But probably the most anticipated party that’s left on the bill is probably the one on the 21st November.
The 21st sees an old heavyweight come head to head with a new heavyweight. The long time prog purveyor John Digweed heads the bill with relatively new heavyweight Luciano and all his Cadenza chums backing him up. Its sure to be a heavyweight clash. So for your chance to get some ring side seats for this baby, simply answer the question below:
Luciano is the the head honcho for Cadenza, but which label does John Digweed run?
A. Seabed
B. Redrock
C. Bedrock
Send your answer along with your name and location to sublevelsessions@googlemail.com. Compeition closes Thursday 20th November 2008.
