Sonar Line Up Announced!

So the bulk of the line-up has been announced and it’s looking pretty hot. We already knew The Chems, LCD Soundsystem and Air were on the bill. So who else is on? Well as expected Richie Hawtin is taking his Plastikman world tour to Sonar, we’re very excited about that! The musical genius that is Matthew Herbet will be in attendance too and Sonar firm favourite 2ManyDJs are also returning. Booka Shade will be bringing their live show to the delight of many and from the hip hop side of things Kid Koala is booked. I’ve only seen him once but his show was one of the most creative things I’ve seen in hip hop. Talking of hip hop, on of the originators The Sugar Hill Gang are also set to make an appearance!
One of the themes for this year will be a focus on the multi faceted British music scene which will showcase everything from the large acts like The Chems and Hot Chip though to the underground with the likes of Joy Orbison, Speech Debelle, Sandwell District and Fuck Buttons. No doubt more will be announced in the coming weeks and we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Valentines weekend, according to numerous industries the only weekend where you can show your love to that special person through expensive mediocre set menus, wilted single roses and novelty heart shaped gifts. This weekend sees the start of the Red Bull Music Academy which is taking place over the coming weeks in London. The academy brings together prospective musical talent from across the world to work and share ideas with help from established and successful music industry types. In conjunction with the academy, Red Bull have a series of events lined up for the general public. This Friday sees Red Bull team up with Resident Advisor at the stunning Royal Festival Hall in the South Bank Centre for a head on collision of experimental electronica, Jazz and techno. Richie Hawtin Will Be Plastik This Year

Initially there were some rumours, then there was a survey and now it is all confirmed. Richie Hawtin is bringing back Plastikman for a live world tour encompassing 18 years of material, advancing technology and all the lessons learnt from the audio visual Contakt. This is going to be pure unadulterated Richie Hawtin in control of all the elements.
The show will debut at this year’s Timewarp in Mannheim followed by a show this April at Coachella festival in California. I’d bet a lot on a showing at Sonar festival, and maybe even Glastonbury? I’d also imagine that all the big cities will be included from London and Berlin to Tokyo and New York.

A Couple More Big Guns Added to Sonar 2010

Another couple of headlining announcements for Sonar 2010… English ghetto boy Dizzee Rascal has been added to the bill, which will surely keep the travelling Brits “Bonkers” happy. If he plays a good proportion of Boy In Da Corner then it will be a worthy addition. Other headliner sees the return of The Chemical Brothers. Massive for me, ever since a kid I’ve always loved the ballsy beats the Chems have knocked out. Their showing at Sonar 2005 was an extraordinary showing whilst their Glastonbury shows have gone down in legend with their tripped out visuals. So that’s now Air, LCD Soundsystem and The Chems. Things are looking peachy.

A Multiple Birthday Weekender

As always we’re on hand to help you through the plethora of London nights happening this weekend. For the first weekend of Feb we have a selection of birthday celebrations, toilet raves and basement debauchery.
Act Natural @ The Hub (Buy Tickets)
Initially it was just Anthea and Alex Cellar set to headline this Friday night get together, but with 54 losing its license, Product have handed over their headliners Kruse & Nürnberg to set up a now pretty sizeable night. Expect lashings of deep percussive house easing you out of Friday and right into Saturday morning. All is not lost for Product though. They’ll be throwing a free party at the Castle pub round the corner. So if you’re in the area pop down and show some support!
Decked Out 10th Anniversary @ Coronet Theatre
The first of the weekend birthdays comes from Decked Out a London based DJ/artist agency celebrating 10 years in the business. They’ve roped in all their DJs to lay on an extravagant celebration with the likes of Dave Clarke, Justin Robertson, Erol Alkan, Justice’s Xavier, Boys Noise, DJ Mehdi, The Glimmers, Aeroplane and Busy P. Plus all DJs are playing slightly alternative sets and donating their DJ fee to local charity Kids Company. Its gonna be noisy, sweaty but definitely bouncy fun. The Early Bird Catches the Sonar Worm | Festival Preview

We’re barely out of January but thoughts are already turning to summer festival activities. If you were militantly organised you would have booked your Glasto ticket back in October. Crazy, I know. But the early bird catches the worm and all that. Another early bird special on the go is EarPipe favourite Sonar festival. Situated in and around the city of Barcelona over 3 days and 2 nights, Sonar combines forward thinking music and the multimedia arts to create a diverse and fun filled festival to the backdrop of a beautiful city. Ok the night time events in an exhibition hall on an industrial estate do lack that modernist Gaudi finesse you might expect from Barcelona, but the climate and music definitely make up for that. Also, during the day you’re based in the city so you’re free to explore all over as opposed to being penned in some camp site for the whole weekend. That pretty much sums up the whole weekend for Sonar – you get all the delights of a music festival, yet you have the freedom to explore Barcelona itself, and none of this camping bollocks, just festivals, parties and when you need it, beds, showers and running water. › Continue reading

So I guess I should do some NYE recommendations since it’s that time of year again. However I might be a little late on the ball these days as you practically need to start planning your NYE activities in the summer. But if you’re still stuck for something to do here goes:
Eastern Electrics (Buy Tickets)
Top of the picks again is Eastern Electrics. Last year’s party was quite phenomenal – great line up, good crowd and interesting location. This year is more of the same. Headlining the main room is the amazing Steve Bug, he’ll be bringing in the new year with his 11pm set. Shonky is in there for some moral support whilst the BLOC folk take over the second room with a seriously dubbed out line-up – Kode 9, Appleblim and Plastician. Finally Man Make Music host the third room with a couple of bumping headliners in the form of Justin Martin and Riva Starr, a pretty stellar line-up for new years. Location wise they’ve taken over some railway arches, this time in London Bridge, next door to the new Shard building on St Thomas Street three minutes walk from the station. Can Fun Only Be Had In Warehouses? | DDD 7th Birthday Review & Cocoon Warehouse Project

Over the last few weekends I’ve done nothing but dance around in warehouses. I’m starting to think real nightclubs don’t exist anymore. I can’t even remember the last time I queued up for the toilet not to be greeted by the striking chemical aromas of the portaloo bowl. Despite my moans I’ve actually had great fun.
Last weekend a small warehouse tucked in between some housing blocks just behind Kingsland Road Station hosted DDD’s MJ themed 7th Birthday. It was an inconspicuous location with the warehouse nestled in a very quiet residential area. Walking round the corner from the station it seems like a walk home rather than a walk to the party, but looks can deceiving. It still doesn’t seem normal as I pass the two solitary bouncers out the front, then the guest list girl with gay porn playing cards for accessories. But after going through the curtained entrance into the main room it all falls into place. A small warehouse space is bustling with a comfortable crowd lapping up the techy dish being served up by DDD resident Simon Baker. Simon has always been a quality resident for DDD and his main room set comes up trumps. He’s cranking out some big beats which keeps a fair sized dedicated crowd down the front. Walking through to the back room you pass all manner of MJs from yesteryear. Michael Jackson circa 1979 Off The Wall was a particular favourite as full tuxedos with too short trousers were dug out. There were a couple of MJs from the Thriller era and even one from the more up to date Bo Selecta guise. Quite a surreal backdrop whilst Daniele Moore is dropping classic disco and house cuts. Daniele showed some good music knowledge with her tune selection, but lacked a little finesse in mixing. However disco is a hard genre to mix and more often than not the stop/start is king, or queen in her case. › Continue reading
Weekend Party Round Up – DDD, Lost In the Loft, Superfreq and Disco Bloodbath

Gale force winds, torrential rain but despite the forces of nature there is still plenty of things on for the folk of London town. We’ve got parties hundreds of feet high, we’ve got new warehouses, we’ve got lofts and we’ve got our old favourites. But before we get into that let me reminisce about last weekend.
Disco Bloodbath continued their sound system travels around north east London locations last weekend. Previous Bloodbaths that I have been to always tended to be held in various ironic Dalston clubs which were always great fun. But with its astronomic rise to popularity over the last few years it was just getting harder and harder to pack everyone in to those sweaty basements. On Saturday they set up shop at a warehouse on Bocking Street and I have to say it was a great location. The space was just perfect for the size of crowd. Furthermore it was in an actual warehouse with real warehouse pillars and high ceilings rather than a mock warehouse which is actually a car park under some railway arches. › Continue reading

The Weekend Reprise – Contakt, Ministry Birthday, Aphex Twin, Secretsundaze & WYS!

Contakt with Richie Hawtin
For one more time this year London will be graced with the last Contakt show for the year. It’s been almost a year since they last step foot in London and almost a year and a half since they started doing the show. If you haven’t heard by now the Contakt concept brings the Minus clan together, allowing them to perform as one unit set to the backdrop of some impressive visuals. Basically it’s an elaborate back to back session with all the Minus producers in front of a massive LED display showing some incredible trippy visuals. › Continue reading
The Disco Will Not Close – Fabric 10th Birthday

Only great things make their 10th anniversary. House music has been going for plus 20 years now. A Technics turntable often lives well beyond 10 years without any problems. Harry Patch celebrated eleven decades on this planet which itself has been in existence for 450 million decades. And most importantly my pair of lucky boxers celebrated turning ten the other week. there are a few holes, tears and stains, but by god they’re comfortable.
Another thing that’s turning ten in October will be Fabric. After busting through the super club crash of the early noughties. At a time where large clubs and nights were ending due to a loss of appetite for big room trance in soulless douldrums, Fabric remained unphased and continued sticking to its underground music policy to pull through the tough times in club land. Their music policy paid off and the club’s popularity rose with the upward trends of underground house and techno as well as the emergence of breakbeat and the second wind of drum n bass. Before long, from the strength of the nights along with their much revered CD series Fabric were setting the trends and becoming the template for what clubs should be doing. › Continue reading
Life Beyond the M25 – The Warehouse Project is Back in Manchester

It’s pretty easy to stay stuck on this fair island called London. It seems everything you could possibly need is right here within the confines of our concrete perimeter, the M25. But believe it or not life does exist beyond those walls. For the last four years, during the autumn and winter months, Manchester has been the clubbing destination of the North. The reason – a grotty car park found in the arches of Manchester’s Piccadilly train station where the Warehouse Project setup shop to host some of the strongest nights past the Watford Gap service station.
Once again the team have put together another great run of nights starting from the end of September and running every weekend through till New Years Day. Last year we had great fun at the Cocoon night where Tobi Neumann absolutely smashed the main room after Sven Vath and the Ar:Pi:Ar boys completely stamped their mark on the back room. We also heard great reports about the Minus night with Richie Hawtin and the Resident Advisor night with Luciano and John Digweed.
